George Gittoes’ exhibition The Augustus Tower Suite about a time when it seems the ‘bad guys’ have won. Hellen Rose’s The Haunted Burqa is the struggle to survive these ‘bad guys’.
Presented in a historical Australian home setting that we all look back on as a time of hope and freedom. Take a step into the wild and meet what is inhabiting the Surf Shack now.

Over the last five years Hellen Rose and George Gittoes have had the pleasure of being the neighbours of the Werri Beach, Surf Shack. A classic fibro beachfront holiday house built in 1947 and rented by the local professional surfing community. Sadly, it is about to be demolished as the beachfront becomes prime real estate.
Every morning we have watched the surfers running across the road to ‘check out’ the waves and filmed their highly imaginative parties. There is a hole in the side wall where Ned punched it after losing his girlfriend to a mate. The shack is full of Mojo and is as much a feature of the art work as the paintings and performances we are installing.
When the Covid 19 lockdown began we were about to film a series of documentaries, starting out in Baghdad and taking me back to all the war zones I have lived over the last 40 years.
Unable to travel I decided to look inward and attempt to develop images for ‘a time the bad guys seem to be winning’; this Trump Era of strongman dictators manipulated by greed and corrupt money and protected by police and security forces. To find a model for this I looked back 50 years to the series of 24 etchings I exhibited at the original Yellow House in Kings Cross Sydney in 1970, titled ‘The Hotel Kennedy’ suite.
The Yellow House Kings Cross happened at the height of the Vietnam War. I had begun the series in the US during the Presidency of Richard Nixon, Civil Rights Protests, after the death of Martin Luther King and astronauts returning from orbiting the moon. For the Surf Shack Show I have created a suite of 29 paintings in the same style as my, youthful, Hotel Kennedy works and titled The Augustus Tower Suite.
